South Platte River
Colorado's most storied trout water and the Front Range's home river — from the Cheesman Canyon and Deckers wild-trout tailwater below Cheesman Dam down through metro Denver, where it turns into a surprising urban carp, smallmouth, and stocked-trout fishery. The upper reach is release-driven and technical; the city reach fishes best on low, clear flows before snowmelt loads it.

Arkansas River
The longest stretch of Gold Medal trout water in the country — a big freestone browns-and-rainbows river tumbling from Leadville through Browns Canyon and Bighorn Sheep Canyon. Snowmelt loads it into rafting-grade water by June; as runoff recedes through July it drops into prime wade-and-float shape, capped by the famous summer caddis hatch.

Fryingpan River
A world-famous tailwater below Ruedi Reservoir, dropping fourteen miles to the Roaring Fork at Basalt — cold, clear, and technical, growing enormous rainbows and browns that gorge on the mysis shrimp flushed from the dam. Flow is entirely release-driven; the 'Toilet Bowl' below the dam and the runs downstream fish best on low, steady releases.

Roaring Fork River
The Fork drops from Independence Pass through Aspen, Basalt, and Carbondale to the Colorado at Glenwood, gathering the Fryingpan and Crystal along the way — a freestone Gold Medal river of wild browns, rainbows, whitefish, and cutthroat that only gets bigger downstream. Snowmelt-high and float-grade in June, it drops into superb wading and floating through the summer.

Gunnison River
One of the West's great trout rivers — from the wadeable valley reach near Gunnison down into the sheer Black Canyon and the Gold Medal Gunnison Gorge, a hike-in and float wilderness of big wild browns and rainbows. The gorge is dam-release-driven below the Gunnison Tunnel; treat its numbers as release-controlled wade-and-float safety, not a casual wading depth.

Colorado River
The headwater Colorado runs cold and trouty from Grand Lake through the Kremmling / Pumphouse canyon and Gore Canyon down toward Glenwood — a big freestone with wild browns, rainbows, and native whitefish, plus pike in the slower reaches. It's snowmelt-swollen and float-grade in June; below Glenwood it becomes big whitewater water where the numbers frame boat and bank safety, not wading.

Blue River
A dam-release tailwater running north from Silverthorne through the Gold Medal water below Dillon Reservoir, then down to the Colorado below Green Mountain. Cold year-round with wild browns and rainbows keyed on mysis shrimp near the dam, plus a crimson kokanee run each fall — flow is entirely release-controlled, so the reservoir schedule matters more than any single number.

Taylor River

Animas River
The 'River of Souls' drops from the San Juan high country at Silverton down through Durango, where it runs right past downtown as a wild-trout and whitewater river. Snowmelt-swollen and rafting-grade in June, it drops into good wading through town by summer; the upper Silverton reach has only a short snow-free season.

A classic freestone tumbling from the Climax divide through Minturn, Edwards, and Gypsum to the Colorado — wild browns and rainbows in fast pocket water, with native whitefish in the deeper runs. Cache la Poudre River
Colorado's only Wild & Scenic river — the Poudre drops out of Rocky Mountain National Park through its namesake canyon to Fort Collins, a wild browns-and-rainbows freestone of boulder pockets and plunge pools. Snowmelt-high and violent through the canyon in June, it drops into excellent wading through the summer.

Yampa River
A rare free-flowing western river running through Steamboat Springs, with a Gold Medal tailwater reach below Stagecoach Reservoir and a wild freestone downtown stretch. Wild browns and rainbows and native whitefish fill it; summer low water and warm temperatures trigger fishing closures, so the shoulder windows and the cold tailwater carry the season.

Dolores River
A San Juan freestone and tailwater — wild trout in the upper reach below Rico, then a Gold Medal tailwater below McPhee Reservoir near the town of Dolores. The tailwater lives and dies by dam releases, which run low in dry years; when the water is there, it grows strong browns and rainbows.

Born in North Park where the Michigan, Illinois, and Grizzly-Canadian all meet, the North Platte gathers in the high sagebrush basin and drops north into the North Gate Canyon Wild Trout reach at the Wyoming line — big wild browns and rainbows in a remote, walk-and-wade and float freestone. Fraser River
The Fraser drops out of the Winter Park high country through Fraser and Tabernash to the Colorado at Granby — a small, cold Grand County freestone of wild browns, rainbows, and brookies in willow-lined runs and beaver-meadow pools. Long dewatered by transmountain diversions, it has been rebuilt reach by reach and fishes best as summer runoff recedes into low, clear water.
