Connecticut's premier trout tailwater — the West Branch below Goodwin Dam runs cold and clear all year, with a marquee Trout Management Area from Riverton downstream holding big wild and holdover browns and rainbows. Flow is dam-influenced: the upper reaches fish on steady cold releases, while the lower main stem through Unionville and Tariffville warms and mixes in smallmouth and carp. Housatonic River
A big, storied freestone in the northwest hills — the Housatonic Trout Management Area around Cornwall holds wild and holdover browns and rainbows, and the whole river is a first-rate summer smallmouth fishery once it warms. Long riffle-and-pool reaches make it a classic wade and drift river; the lower stretch below Lake Zoar is dam-influenced.

Connecticut River
New England's great river — a huge, mostly slow main stem through Hartford and down to Long Island Sound. This is a boat and bank fishery, not a wade stream: smallmouth and largemouth on the rock and coves, channel cats and carp on the bottom, northern pike in the backwaters, one of the East's biggest American shad runs each spring, and striped bass pushing up on the tide. Treat conditions as big-river stage and bank/boat safety.

Shetucket River
Formed where the Willimantic and Natchaug join, the Shetucket runs to Norwich as a mid-size river with a seasonal broodstock Atlantic salmon fishery below Scotland Dam, plus smallmouth, shad, and a tidal striper run in the lower end.
