Suwannee River
The iconic 'Swanee' - a wild, tea-black, spring-fed river rising in the Okefenokee Swamp and running to the Gulf, lined with limestone banks, white sandbars, and dozens of crystal springs. It's the heart of Suwannee bass country and a superb largemouth, panfish, catfish, and gar fishery, with rocky shoals in the middle reaches and big water down low. A float, boat, and bank river - the shoals wade only at low flow.

St. Johns River
Florida's longest river and one of the few in the country that flows north - a huge, slow, tannic, tidal-influenced river running from the marshes near Vero Beach up to Jacksonville. It's a premier trophy largemouth, speck, and catfish fishery, and above Lake Monroe it hosts the southernmost American shad run in the nation each winter. This is a boat-and-bank river, not a wade stream: read the stage for launchability, flooding, and bank safety.

Santa Fe River
A spring-fed Suwannee tributary famous for the string of gin-clear springs along its lower course - and for the natural land bridge at O'Leno, where the whole river vanishes underground and rises again three miles downstream. Below the rise it's a cool, clear limestone river full of Suwannee bass, largemouth, panfish, and gar, and one of north Florida's best paddle fisheries.

Chipola River
A spring-fed clearwater gem of the panhandle - the Chipola runs cool and clear over limestone shoals through Florida Caverns country before joining the Apalachicola. It's Florida's only true shoal-bass river, and also holds largemouth, spotted bass, panfish, and clear water that makes it a favorite paddle and wade fishery. Low, clear flow is the window; the shoals wash out when it's up.

Wekiva River
A protected, spring-fed clearwater run north of Orlando, fed by Wekiwa and Rock Springs and designated a National Wild and Scenic River. Cool, stable, and gin-clear over sand and eelgrass, it holds largemouth, sunshine bass, bream, and Florida gar in a jungle-lined setting - one of the most beautiful paddle fisheries in central Florida.

Apalachicola River
Florida's largest river by flow - big, powerful water formed where the Chattahoochee and Flint meet below Jim Woodruff Dam at the Georgia line, running to the Gulf at Apalachicola Bay. It's a boat-and-bank fishery for trophy largemouth, spotted bass, Gulf-strain stripers, and big blue and flathead catfish, with countless sloughs and oxbows. Frame conditions as generation-driven boat/bank safety, never a wade number.

Withlacoochee River (South)
The peninsular Withlacoochee is one of the few Florida rivers that flows north, rising in the Green Swamp and winding through the Withlacoochee State Forest to the Gulf at Yankeetown. Slow, tannic, and cypress-lined up top, it firms up over limestone and shoals in the lower reaches, holding largemouth, native Suwannee bass, panfish, and catfish. A paddle-and-small-boat river more than a wade stream.

Peace River
A classic southwest Florida river running from the Green Swamp lakes down through Arcadia to Charlotte Harbor - tannic, sandy, and famous both for bass and bream fishing and for the fossil and shark-tooth hunting along its gravel bars. It holds largemouth, panfish, catfish, gar, and bowfin, and turns tidal-brackish down low. A paddle-and-bank river with plenty of sandbar access.

One of Florida's most beautiful spring runs, the Rainbow rises from a first-magnitude spring at Dunnellon and flows gin-clear over white sand and waving eelgrass to join the Withlacoochee. Cool and stable year-round, it holds largemouth, bluegill, shellcracker, and gar in astonishing clarity - a protected paddle fishery (electric motors only on much of the run).

Hillsborough River
Tampa's home river - a spring-fed (via Crystal Springs) tannic river winding through the Green Swamp and Hillsborough River State Park before pooling behind the city reservoir and turning tidal-brackish toward the bay. The upper river is a wild bass, bream, and gar fishery with rapids at the state park; the lower reaches hold bass, catfish, and even snook in the brackish transition.

Ocklawaha River
A wild, tannic, cypress-lined tributary of the St. Johns winding north through the Ocala National Forest, fed by Silver Springs and controlled by dams at Moss Bluff and Rodman. It's a classic largemouth, speck, and catfish river with willing panfish and gar, best fished from a small boat or kayak. Flow is dam-influenced and the water tea-colored.

Wakulla River
One of the world's great springs feeds the Wakulla, a gin-clear, eelgrass-carpeted river south of Tallahassee full of manatees, alligators, and wading birds. Cool and stable year-round, its freshwater reaches hold largemouth, bream, and gar in stunning clarity before the river turns brackish toward the Gulf. A protected paddle fishery - much of the upper river is closed above the state park.

Escambia River
The lower end of Alabama's Conecuh, the Escambia runs tannic and sandy down to Escambia Bay near Pensacola through a broad, swampy floodplain of oxbows and sloughs. It's a productive largemouth, spotted bass, panfish, and catfish river, protected in part by the Escambia River WMA, and best fished from a boat or kayak with the sandbars for bank access.

Ochlockonee River
A blackwater river running from south Georgia through the Big Bend to Ochlockonee Bay, split by Lake Talquin west of Tallahassee. Above the lake it's a wild, tannic bass, panfish, and Suwannee-bass river; below Jackson Bluff Dam it's a striper, bass, and catfish tailwater. The lower reaches are generation-influenced boat/bank water.

Blackwater River
One of the purest sand-bottomed rivers in the country, winding gin-clear and tea-tinted through Blackwater River State Forest and State Park - a designated canoe trail famous for its white sandbars. It's a light-tackle redbreast, largemouth, and spotted-bass fishery in a stunningly clear setting; the stable, spring-and-swamp-fed flow keeps it wadeable and paddleable most of the year.

Silver River
The Silver River flows from world-famous Silver Springs near Ocala - a first-magnitude spring group - running gin-clear over eelgrass and limestone to the Ocklawaha, past wild rhesus monkeys and abundant gators. Cool and stable, it holds largemouth, bluegill, and gar in glass-clear water; the state park glass-bottom-boat headspring is protected, so fish the lower river toward the Ocklawaha.

Choctawhatchee River
A winding, tannic, sand-bottomed coastal-plain river dropping out of Alabama to Choctawhatchee Bay near Freeport - full of white sandbars, cypress sloughs, and hard-fighting fish. It holds largemouth, spotted bass, redbreast and bream, catfish, and gar, and is a float-and-bank river more than a wade stream; the sandbars make good access and camping.

Myakka River
A designated Wild and Scenic river running through Myakka River State Park - one of Florida's oldest and largest parks - before widening into brackish tidal water toward Charlotte Harbor. Cypress-lined, alligator-rich, and wonderfully wild, its freshwater reaches hold largemouth, panfish, gar, and bowfin, while the lower river adds snook and redfish in the brackish transition.

A gin-clear, spring-fed river rising from the famous Weeki Wachee mermaid spring near Brooksville and running cool and steady over white sand and eelgrass to the Gulf. Econfina Creek
Not to be confused with the Big Bend river of the same name, the panhandle's Econfina Creek is a spring-fed gem north of Panama City - fast, clear, and boulder-and-sand bottomed through the Econfina Creek WMA, fed by Gainer and other springs. It fishes for redbreast, largemouth, and spotted bass in some of the clearest water in the region.

Alafia River
A tannic, sandy river draining the phosphate country southeast of Tampa, running from its north and south prongs down through Lithia and Riverview to Tampa Bay. It's a well-known largemouth, bream, and catfish fishery with a strong run near the Lithia and Alderman's Ford reaches, turning tidal-brackish for snook down low. A paddle-and-small-boat river with good park access.

Black Creek
One of the best largemouth rivers in northeast Florida, Black Creek runs from its north and south forks through Middleburg and Penney Farms to the St. Johns near Green Cove Springs. Tannic and cypress-lined with surprising depth, it holds trophy largemouth, specks, bream, and catfish, plus stocked sunshine bass - a boat-and-paddle river with strong bass fishing around the forks.

Withlacoochee River (North)
A separate river from the peninsular Withlacoochee - this one rises in south Georgia and joins the Suwannee at Suwannee River State Park. Tannic and limestone-bottomed, with shoals and springs like Madison Blue, it holds Suwannee bass, largemouth, panfish, and catfish and sees far less pressure than its famous neighbor.

Caloosahatchee River
The Caloosahatchee links Lake Okeechobee to the Gulf at Fort Myers, its upper freshwater course a series of controlled pools between locks and dams (S-77, Ortona, and the W.P. Franklin Lock at S-79, the last freshwater barrier). Above Franklin Lock it's a largemouth, spotted-bass, panfish, and catfish river; below it turns brackish for snook and tarpon. Flow is release- and tide-driven - read it as boat/bank safety, not wading.

Yellow River
A sandy, tannic panhandle river rising in Alabama and running down through Blackwater River State Forest country to Blackwater Bay near Milton. It's a classic redbreast-and-bass float with spotted (Alabama) bass on the current, largemouth in the slower bends, and non-native flatheads in the deep wood. A paddle-and-small-boat river with white sandbars for camping and access.

A short, spectacularly clear spring run in Ichetucknee Springs State Park, world-famous for tubing over its white sand and eelgrass. The clearwater reach holds redbreast, Suwannee bass, and bream, and where it joins the Santa Fe it opens into stronger bass water - a stable, gin-clear paddle fishery (note the state park limits fishing in the tubing reach; fish the lower river toward the Santa Fe).

Econlockhatchee River
The 'Econ' is a wild, tannic, cypress-and-oak-lined tributary of the St. Johns east of Orlando, protected along much of its course and a favorite central-Florida paddle fishery. It holds largemouth, bluegill, warmouth, gar, and bowfin in a surprisingly remote setting for its location - a small blackwater river best fished from a kayak.

Loxahatchee River
One of only two federally designated Wild and Scenic rivers in Florida, the Loxahatchee runs from the cypress swamps of Jonathan Dickinson State Park down through a jungle gorge to the tidal estuary at Jupiter. The freshwater upper river holds largemouth, bream, and gar under a canopy of cypress and palm, while the tidal lower river is a famous snook, tarpon, and jack fishery. A spectacular paddle river.

Holmes Creek
A spring-fed, cypress-lined tributary of the Choctawhatchee near Vernon, fed by Cypress Springs and famous as one of the panhandle's prettiest paddling and panfish streams. Cool, clear, and steady over sand and limestone, it holds redbreast, largemouth, and shellcracker in a jungle setting.

St. Marks River
A spring-fed river south of Tallahassee that rises, sinks at the Natural Bridge, and boils back up to run clear and cool toward the Gulf at Newport. The freshwater spring reaches hold largemouth, sunshine bass, and bream on eelgrass and limestone; the lower river turns tidal-brackish. A boat-and-paddle river fed by big springs.

Fisheating Creek
The only free-flowing tributary left to Lake Okeechobee, Fisheating Creek winds wild and tannic through cypress swamp and prairie from Palmdale down to the big lake at Lakeport. A designated canoe trail through a WMA, it's a genuinely remote largemouth, bream, gar, and bowfin fishery - a paddle river with gators, wading birds, and cypress cathedrals.

Dunns Creek
A short, deep, tannic creek connecting Crescent Lake to the St. Johns near Satsuma - a well-known trophy largemouth and speck fishery in the heart of the northeast Florida bass country. Shoal River
A clear, sandy-bottomed tributary of the Yellow River draining the Crestview area, prized by local paddlers for its white sandbars and willing panfish. It holds redbreast and spotted bass on the current and largemouth in the deeper bends - a small-water float that firms up over sand and clay.

Alapaha River
A tannic, sandy tributary of the Suwannee draining down from Georgia through Jennings, running seasonal over karst - it can go bone-dry into sinkholes in drought and roar bank-full after rain. When it's flowing it fishes for redbreast, Suwannee bass, and largemouth on the sandbars and current, joining the Suwannee near the state line.

Palatlakaha River
A chain-of-lakes river connecting the Clermont-area lakes north through Groveland toward the Ocklawaha basin, running slow and vegetated through a series of structures and marshes. It's a solid largemouth, speck, and bream fishery in the lakes and connecting runs - a boat-and-paddle river more than a wade stream.
