Henry's Fork
One of the most famous trout rivers on earth — the Henry's Fork of the Snake runs from Island Park through the Harriman 'Railroad Ranch' flats and down through Box Canyon and Ashton. The Ranch is a technical, spring-influenced dry-fly proving ground; Box Canyon is heavy pocket water full of big rainbows. Flows are stabilized by upstream reservoirs and vary with releases and runoff.

South Fork Snake River
Idaho's blue-ribbon trout river — the tailwater below Palisades Dam through Swan Valley and the canyon, holding the largest wild Yellowstone cutthroat population in the state alongside big browns and rainbows. Flow is release-controlled by the Bureau of Reclamation: the river runs high and hard through June runoff and irrigation-season releases, then settles into prime drift and wade water as flows drop.

South Fork Boise River
A world-class tailwater below Anderson Ranch Dam, running cold and clear through a high-desert canyon full of thick, wild rainbows. Flow is entirely generation- and irrigation-controlled: it fishes best on stable, moderate releases and turns fast, deep, and dangerous when the dam ramps up for irrigation season, so the release schedule matters more than any single CFS number.

The city trout river — a cold tailwater below Lucky Peak Dam running right through downtown Boise, stocked and wild rainbows and browns holding in the riffles and runs of the Greenbelt reach. Coeur d'Alene River
A Panhandle native westslope cutthroat river with two personalities — the free-flowing North Fork above Enaville runs clear and cold through the forest, prime dry-fly cutthroat water, while the lower main river slows and widens toward the chain lakes, holding pike and warmwater fish. The North Fork cutthroat fishery is the draw and is managed for catch-and-release.

One of the wildest rivers in the Lower 48 — the Selway pours out of the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness through gin-clear water full of native westslope cutthroat. The lower reach below Selway Falls is roadless-edge freestone; the upper river is a permitted wilderness float. Cutthroat here are catch-and-release and the fishing is as pristine as it gets.

Snake River
Idaho's great mainstem — a huge, dam-stepped river arcing across the southern plain from the eastern trout reaches through the Hagerman spring-fed water and down the desert canyon toward Weiser. This is big, powerful, release-controlled water: a boat and bank fishery for redband trout, smallmouth, carp, catfish, and sturgeon, framed by stage and current safety rather than a wade number.

Big Lost River

Kootenai River
A big, cold tailwater river in the far northern Panhandle — the Kootenai runs from Libby Dam in Montana through Bonners Ferry and out to British Columbia, holding strong rainbows and whitefish plus the rare, protected white sturgeon.
