The Ohio River forms the state's entire southern border, a vast navigation pool river impounded by a chain of dams. One of ODNR's seven officially-stocked Lake Erie steelhead tributaries, in far Northeast Ohio's Ashtabula County. Known as one of the fastest-clearing Steelhead Alley rivers after a blow-out. Important limitation: there is no active, currently-reporting USGS gauge on this river (the historic site stopped in 1980), so live flow status will show NO DATA rather than a real-time reading.

A small, cold Hocking Hills stream through Clear Creek Metro Park — one of only three Ohio streams in ODNR's put-grow-and-take trout program (stocked yearlings each October, switched from brown to rainbow trout around 2018 after summer thermal stress on browns). Distinct from Clear Fork of the Mohican — don't confuse the two.

The Portage is a low-gradient Lake Erie tributary that comes alive each spring when white bass and walleye push up from the lake toward Woodville and Elmore. Outside the run it is a warmwater stream for channel cats, largemouth, and crappie.

The Auglaize is the Maumee's biggest tributary, a wide, tannin-stained warmwater river winding through the flat farm country of northwest Ohio. Smallmouth, channel cats, and a strong spring walleye push out of the Maumee make the lower river near Defiance the highlight.

A secondary Lake Erie steelhead fishery in Lorain County, between the Vermilion and Rocky rivers geographically. Important distinction: Black River is NOT one of ODNR's officially-stocked steelhead tributaries — fish present are strays wandering in from the adjacent stocked Vermilion and Rocky rivers, so runs are real but less reliable than the five flagship tributaries. Also gets a small fall king salmon run.

The East Fork joins the Little Miami below Milford and is dominated by East Fork Lake (Harsha Lake). Below the dam it is a strong saugeye and smallmouth tailwater; above the lake near Williamsburg it is a clear gravel smallmouth stream.

CFS — cubic feet per second — is how much water is moving past the gauge. Higher CFS means faster, deeper, pushier water. The safe range differs on every river, which is why each gauge carries its own thresholds rather than one blanket number.
Each river page shows total observed rainfall over the last 48 hours plus the forecast for the next 48 hours at that gauge — the fastest way to tell whether the water is about to blow out or start clearing.
