Snake River
Wyoming's marquee cutthroat river and the soul of Jackson Hole — the Snake runs cold and clear beneath the Tetons, holding dense populations of native fine-spotted Snake River cutthroat through braided channels and cottonwood-lined runs. Flow is heavily shaped by Jackson Lake Dam releases; the classic float from Deadman's Bar to Moose is one of the West's great cutthroat drifts.

North Platte River
Wyoming's blue-ribbon trophy trout river — the North Platte runs north out of Colorado through the Saratoga valley, then below Seminoe and Alcova reservoirs it becomes the legendary Miracle Mile and Grey Reef tailwaters, some of the most productive big-trout water in the country. Grey Reef browns and rainbows average huge on scud, midge, and worm patterns; downstream toward Casper, Douglas, and Guernsey the river warms into walleye and catfish water.

Green River
One of the West's great trout rivers from its headwaters down — the Green pours off the Wind River Range near Pinedale as a clear freestone holding Colorado River cutthroat, browns, and rainbows at the famous Warren Bridge float, then below Fontenelle Reservoir it becomes a rich tailwater through the Seedskadee refuge before turning into a big desert river toward Flaming Gorge. Flow below Fontenelle is dam-release driven.

Yellowstone River
The heart of Yellowstone's native cutthroat fishery — the upper Yellowstone flows out of Yellowstone Lake and through Hayden Valley as a big, cold cutthroat river before plunging into the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. The famed Buffalo Ford water opens mid-July under strict catch-and-release rules for native Yellowstone cutthroat.

Wind River
A long, varied river running off the Absaroka and Wind River ranges through the Wind River Reservation and Riverton before pooling in Boysen Reservoir — cold trout water up high near Dubois holding cutthroat, browns, and rainbows, sliding into a warmer, bigger river by Riverton. Below Boysen it re-emerges as the Bighorn. Much of the middle river crosses the reservation, which requires a tribal permit.

Firehole River
One of the most storied trout streams on earth — the Firehole winds through Yellowstone's geyser basins, its water warmed by thermal runoff into a technical, meadow-and-canyon brown-and-rainbow fishery. Hatches are prolific and the fish are educated; summer heat can push water temps high enough to warrant closures, so it fishes best in early summer and fall.

Bighorn River
Wyoming's big-water trophy tailwater and warmwater river in one — where the Wind River emerges from Boysen Reservoir at the Wedding of the Waters it becomes the Bighorn, running cold and rich through Thermopolis as a blue-ribbon brown-and-rainbow tailwater, then warming downstream toward Basin and Kane into big walleye, sauger, and catfish water above Bighorn Lake. Flow is dam-controlled off Boysen.

Lamar River

Flat Creek
Jackson's famous urban spring creek — Flat Creek meanders through the National Elk Refuge just north of town, holding wild Snake River cutthroat in its glassy, weedy channels. The refuge reach opens August 1 under fly-fishing-only, catch-and-release rules and is one of the most technical dry-fly challenges in the West.
